A HISTORY

A few years ago, my friends and I found a Twitter thread from a husband and wife who live-tweeted their Lord of the Rings marathon. The catch: they spent the day eating only food that was eaten (or at least mentioned) in the films. As we read through their day, we thought, “We could totally do this.” As it was just the two of them, their dishes were relatively simple. We thought it would be fun to get a group involved and have folks interpret certain foods as they saw fit. Thus, on October 27, 2018, the Fellowship of the Feast* was born.

Armed with a handwritten list, a boxed set of The Lord of the Rings (Extended Editions) and a head full of food ideas, we gathered some friends and made our first attempt. I spent most of the day running around because I didn't have exact times for when each dish was happening, so our timing was all over the place.

It has become a yearly tradition for us, with the guest list growing ever longer as friends, and friends of friends, get wind of the event and clamor for an invite. We figured we had this pretty much down to a science, so why not share the framework and let folks make it their own? So that is what you will find here: everything you need to make your very own Fellowship of the Feast.

*Other name options included: One Feast to Rule Them All, Feast of the Rings, They’re Taking the Hobbits to Indigestion, Lord of the Feasts, Gimli the Food, Hobbites, The Two Tummies, Return of the Tums.

TIPSIES & TRICKSIES

  • Be creative!

The more you think outside the box, the more fun it is. They might be eating raw orc on screen, but that doesn't mean you have to.

  • Stay organized

Sure spreadsheets aren't everyone's favorite thing, but honestly keeping the timing and the dishes organized will help you be able to actually sit and enjoy the day more.

  • Make it your own

This is just to get you started.

    Feel free to run amuck!
